Frequently Asked Questions

  • The best place to start is by measuring the area you want to cover. You’ll need the length, width, and the depth you want the material spread. Most landscaping materials are sold by the cubic yard, so the amount you need will depend on both the size of the area and how thick the material needs to be.

As a general guide, soil and decorative stone are often spread around 2–3 inches deep, while base materials like crushed limestone or crushed asphalt may require more depth depending on the project. If you’re unsure, contact us before placing your order or use our material calculator by clicking here.

  • A cubic yard is a bulk measurement used for soil, gravel, stone, mulch, and other landscaping materials. One cubic yard is equal to 27 cubic feet.

To picture it, one yard of material is roughly the size of a standard washing machine. The exact coverage will depend on the depth you spread it.

  • It depends on what you’re using it for.

For lawn or garden areas, topsoil is typically the best choice. For driveways, parking areas, or a compacted base, crushed limestone or crushed asphalt may be a better fit. Decorative stone, river rock, or granite are often used for garden beds, pathways, drainage areas, or finishing touches around a property.

If you’re not sure which product is right for your project, send us a message with a quick description of what you’re working on and we can help point you in the right direction.

  • Yes, you can order multiple products. Depending on the products and quantities, they may need to be delivered separately to avoid mixing. Contact us before ordering if you are planning a mixed-material order and want to confirm the best delivery option.

  • Crushed asphalt, also known as asphalt millings, is commonly used for driveways, parking areas, lanes, and other areas where a more compacted surface is needed. It is a cost-effective recycled material that can create a firm, practical surface when properly placed and packed.

  • Crushed limestone is commonly used as a base material for driveways, pathways, patios, parking areas, and other landscaping or construction projects. It packs well and is often used where stability and drainage are important.

  • Yes, firewood is available through our online shop when in stock. Availability may vary by season, so please check the product listing or contact us if you’re looking for a larger order.

  • Yes, D&L offers delivery for landscaping materials and firewood within Winnipeg and surrounding areas. Delivery availability and cost may vary depending on your location, the material ordered, and the size of the load.

  • You do not always need to be home, but we do need clear instructions on where the material should be placed. If there are any access concerns, tight spaces, locked gates, or special instructions, please include those details with your order.

We may contact you before or during delivery if the driver needs clarification.

  • A delivery truck needs a clear, safe access route with enough width, height, and turning space. Please make sure there are no parked vehicles, low branches, overhead wires, fences, or other obstacles blocking the delivery area.

If access is tight, please let us know before delivery so we can review the best option.
